Claudia wows the Judges
Claudia Medina-Moralejo in Year 11 beat hundreds of other international students studying at boarding schools across the UK to win the coveted title of International Boarder of the Year last week.
Organised by Metropolis, publishers of the world – renowned Hobsons UK Boarding Schools Guide, Claudia beat the other finalists who came from Kent College Pembury and Loretto College in Edinburgh to collect her award from journalist and broadcaster, Libby Purves at Shakepseare’s Globe last week. Her winning 1000 word essay entitled “In what ways do you feel your boarding experience has helped you to develop an appreciation of another culture and country?” so impressed the judges that she was declared the outright winner in the Years 9 to11 age group.
Claudia’s day in London also included a trip on the London Eye, a boat trip on the Thames and a tour of Shakespeare’s Globe – as well as a well-earned, celebratory glass of orange juice before heading back to school and revision for GCSEs! Well done Claudia!

Amy triumphs against all odds
Sixteen year old Amy Jones, a Year 11 student at St Teresa’s in Effingham, had an eventful Easter holiday! She took time out from her GCSE revision to beat over 5000 other young riders from all over the UK to become Reserve Champion in the Pony Club Dengie Winter League Show Jumping Competition held in Warwick! Amy and her pony, “P” saw off 87 other finalists to finish just half a second behind the winner, Thomas Dooley from Ireland. As well as an impressive trophy, her triumph earned her a whole host of prizes too!
But Amy’s grit and determination extend well beyond the showjumping arena! Less than two years ago such a feat would have been unimaginable to both Amy and her family. In 2006, and after numerous bouts of severe illness, Amy was admitted to The Royal Brompton Hospital where she was diagnosed with bronchiectasis, a chronic lung disease. Despite missing lengthy periods of school, Amy, with the help of her teachers, worked hard to keep up with her lessons and is now predicted a crop of excellent GCSE results in the summer.
She is also spearheading a fundraising campaign at St Teresa’s to raise money towards making a patient and parents’ “Quiet Room” at the Brompton in memory of a dear friend and fellow sufferer of the disease who died of a brain tumour just before her 15th birthday.
Headmistress, Lesley Falconer said, “We are all very proud of Amy’s tremendous achievements. Despite her illness, Amy’s determination to succeed means that she has done wonderfully well, both on the sports field and in the classroom. Everyone at St Teresa’s has been backing her fundraising efforts and we are looking forward to hearing the final total when all the sponsorship money is collected. She is a very impressive young lady!”

Summers sisters triumph!
Sunday 16th March saw the 40th Annual South East Regional Biathlon Championships at Whitgift School organised by the Olympic Modern Pentathlon Association of Great Britain. This consists of a 100m Swim and 1000m Cross Country Run.
The girls’ under 13 Team event was won by Francesca Summers in Year 7 and her sister, Georgina, who is in Year 5 at the Prep. The girls took 1st place and the Gold Medal and Francesca just missed out on the 'Best Run' of the whole competition across all age groups by the smallest of margins. Georgina set a Personal Best in the 100m swim.
Over this 2 day weekend running parallel to the Biathlon Competition the Olympic Modern Pentathlon Association of Great Britain organised a Tetrathlon (100m Swim, 1000m Run, 10m Pistol Shoot and Epee Fencing). In the Under 15s category Francesca came second and took the silver medal and her sister Georgina (still only ten) and also in the under 15s category, came third and won the bronze medal. Francesca swam 100m in 1min 17sec, ran 1000m cross-country in 3mins 43, shot a score of 85 and won 13 victories in the Epee Fencing. Georgina swam 100m in 1min 21sec, ran 1000m cross-country in 4mins 03, shot a score of 79 and won 10 victories in the Epee Fencing.
Not surprisingly, both Francesca and Georgina have now qualified for the National Biathlon Finals in May 2008. Well done girls! We are all very proud of you!

On 11th March, the Chamber Choir won the Godalming Festival Cup, their very high score of 89 gaining them a Distinction. The girls sang their hearts out in both ‘Bring Him Home’ from Les Misérables and in Humperdink’s ‘Evening Prayer’. The adjudicator praised the lovely sound that the choir made and singled out the two soloists, Selina Lunn and Jane Salmon, for particular praise. Eloise Desoutter proudly received the cup from the adjudicator. Mrs Miller and Mrs Knight were also at the festival and agreed later with Mr Caister that the girls had made us feel very proud of their achievement and had represented the school with aplomb. The Leith Hill Festival is next on the agenda for the choir so watch this space...!

On Sunday 2nd March the U14 Netball Squad took part in the Surrey Schools Netball Tournament Finals at Epsom College. Out of an original entry of about 75 schools only 12 remained to battle for the final places. St Teresa’s U14 Squad had put in a lot of extra practice throughout the weeks leading up to the finals and after a nervous start they got into the swing finishing 2nd in their section having beaten Rosebery, Coombe Girls, Tiffin Girls, Caterham and narrowly losing to Tormead by 9 goals to 10. In the semi-finals they faced the winners of the other section, Epsom College. It was a thrilling game with St Teresa’s winning 10 – 8. An even more nail-biting final took place against Guildford High School. It was drawn right up until the very last seconds when GHS popped in a goal to beat us 7 – 8. Despite the disappointment of losing in the final the girls should be really proud of their achievements. The Squad’s enthusiasm, commitment and determination have been second to none. To come second in the County and be Winners of the U14 District Netball Tournament is absolutely fantastic! Well done girls and a big thank you to all the parents for their wonderful support.
At the time of going to press there are still a number of Netball and Hockey Tournaments to be completed so a full round –up will be in the next Newsletter.

2008 Surrey Schools Problem Solving Challenge
Two teams entered the heats of the 2008 Surrey Schools Problem Solving Challenge at St Bedes’ School .
The task? “Design and build a light switch with a timing mechanism that will cause a light to be switched on at a time close to 15 seconds after the mechanism is started”. Teams were given 90 minutes to complete the challenge using paper, drinking straws, string, paper clips, selotape, foil, rubber bands, a marble, light bulb, battery and connector and points were awarded for design and successful completion.
The Intermediate team - Emma Mason, Lucy Mazalon, Pauline Ng, Selina Greenwood, Omome Etomi and Taymar Scudamore - successfully completed the task with their light being switched on 13.8 seconds after being started and earned the runners-up place in the Year 10-11 group.
The Senior team - Katie Russell, Laura Kanaan, Crystal Tsang, Jasmine Law, Winnie Tang and Bo Bo Leung - was delighted to see their light come on 14.6 seconds after the marble started to roll which was good enough to gain First place in the Year 12-13 group.
Both teams now proceed to the County final at Charterhouse School. Good luck girls!
