St Teresa’s celebrates another year of A level successes!
The results high at St Teresa’s in Effingham continued this year with 79% of all 2009 A level passes being A, B or C.
Of the 39 A level candidates who took exams in 25 academic A level subjects last summer, 21 gained one A grade or more and 31% secured two As amongst their three or four subjects. Star performers included Jennifer Annis who realised 3 A grades in Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics, with A grades at AS level in Physics and General Studies and will go on to read Medicine at University College London. Bobo Leung achieved three A grades and one B and will study Business Economics and Finance at The University of Surrey. With her two As and one B, Lauren Tillott will take up a place at Exeter to read History and classmate, Sam Kanu will take her two As and a B to The School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) to follow a degree in Philosophy and Economics.
Said Headmistress, Lesley Falconer, “This has been another wonderful year for results! Degree courses chosen by our girls include subjects as varied as Law, Equine Management, Mechanical Engineering and Nutrition and Food Science! Well done to all! In a school with a broad ability intake like ours, such success can only be achieved by the hard work and dedication of both the girls and their staff and they have all done extremely well. We are particularly pleased to be able to report that all our Sixth Form leavers have now been accepted into their first choice or insurance offer universities to study for degrees in their chosen subjects. No mean feat as this has been a very difficult year with four or five applicants through clearing for every place.”
St Teresa’s GCSE students have a great year!
St Teresa’s GCSE candidates have cause to celebrate again this year with a bumper crop of great results!
An amazing 63% of all passes were at A*, A or B grades and a staggering 30% were A* or A.
Top performers Bea Gundry, Tabby Chan, Lucy Mazalon and Scarlett Wong have particular cause to celebrate today with each having netted 10 or 11 GCSEs at A* and A grades. Scarlett also tucked a couple of A grade AS levels under her belt last week too…………. in Mathematics and Japanese!
Other GCSE stars at St Teresa’s include Camilla Ivey, Flora Morgan, Selina Greenland and Sarah-Jayne Stamper.
Lesley Falconer, Head of the Effingham school, said, “We are all so proud of the academic achievements of our girls again this year! As a school with a broad- ability intake our students and their staff work hard to gain these top results and they should be shouted from the rooftops! Well done to them all!”
Cooking up a set of great results!
Having gained 2As and a B in Art & Design, English Literature and Religious Studies, St Teresa’s Sixth Former Marsalaidh Kelman, savoured the sweet taste of success this morning when she picked up her A level results.
But when she is not at her books, this18 year old can be found in the kitchen…………….baking!
Says Marsalaidh, “My interest in cake-making started when I took GCSE Food Technology and realised that I found the subject not only interesting but also relaxing. I made so many cakes that I started to take them into school for my friends’ birthdays and, from that, commissions began to come in thick and fast until my baking grew into a small business. I was even able to generate enough funds from it to allow me to take part in the recent school World Challenge visit to Peru!”
But far from a career in catering, Marsalaidh, who won every prize for Art, Religious Studies and English at the school’s annual Prize Giving in July, will be taking up a place at Cardiff University to read English Literature!
Headmistress, Lesley Falconer said, “Marsalaidh truly deserves her success and we all wish her well at Cardiff. She has managed to combine her academic work and duties in school as a Prefect with a wealth of extra-curricular activities such as Young Enterprise and working towards her silver Duke of Edinburgh Award. She – and her cakes – will be missed!”
On top of the world at St Teresa’s
What a great year 16 year old St Teresa’s student, Omome Etomi has had!
A shy Omome arrived at the Effingham school only two short years ago from a small village in Nigeria where she had attended a school with just 100 pupils! Now, she looks back on the whirlwind of the last two years and smiles as she recounts the fun she has had gaining Duke of Edinburgh Bronze and Silver Awards and the confidence built whilst enjoying her new – found loves of jazz piano and singing.
And it doesn’t stop there! In May Omome beat hundreds of other international students at boarding schools across the UK in the “International Boarder of the Year” competition held annually by Metropolis, publishers of the world – renowned Hobsons UK Boarding Schools Guide…………and now she has netted 3 A*s, 6As and 2 Bs in her GCSEs.
Omome will study for A levels in Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics and Psychology when she moves into the Sixth Form of the Effingham school in September and she hopes to go to university in the UK in two years’ time to read for a degree in Medicine.
Headmistress, Lesley Falconer said, “Omome has been a joy ever since she arrived at St Teresa’s! She settled into boarding school routines very quickly and happily and has contributed so much to school life whilst working so hard at her GCSEs yet still found time to shine in activities outside the classroom”.
Victoria is a straight A student
Victoria Carter, a Lower Sixth former at St Teresa’s in Effingham, could hardly stop smiling when she received her AS results this morning!
She netted 3 straight As in English Literature, Drama and History – and all in the same year that she auditioned and beat more than 15 000 other stagestruck youngsters to win a place in the National Youth Theatre. Vicky has spent the summer on one of the sought-after NYT training courses to expand her theatrical knowledge – and ensure that her name reaches the right ears!
And when this 18 year old is not on stage in productions both in and out of school she might be found abseiling down tall buildings in London or jumping out of aircraft to raise money for her favourite charity – The Stroke Foundation!
An avid historian, she has also recently been chosen to take part in a Government- funded initiative to send a select bunch of A level History students to Auschwitz on a gruelling, but fascinating daytrip in November. Head of History at the school, Jenny Bartlett, said, “Vicky has done incredibly well to be chosen for this trip and we look forward to her presentation to the school when she returns”.
Headmistress Lesley Falconer said, “Vicky is a generous, warm student and she initiates many fundraising projects as well as putting in the hard work to obtain these excellent results! We are very proud of her! She is hoping to pursue a career in Creative Writing and this is a fantastic start!”
