Introduction to boarding

St Teresa's offers first class boarding facilities with around a third of the girls at St Teresa's choosing to board on a weekly or termly basis. Younger girls are accommodated in bright attractive rooms sharing perhaps with up to 5 other girls, while older girls have their own study bedrooms. Each year has its own Common Room with television and video recorder. There is a newly equipped games room with digital television, a pool table and table tennis table.

A resident Matron is responsible for the girls' physical welfare and a General Practitioner visits the school every week.

A programme of activities and trips are arranged for the boarders in the evening and at weekends.

The Boarding facility is open throughout the school year during term time including every weekend.

IN BOARDING WE PROMOTE THE AIMS OF OUR SCHOOL BY:

  • Developing the whole person, with a desire for truth and respect for others.
  • Providing an open and trusting ethos in which each boarder feels able to approach any other member of the school community (staff or pupil), confident in the knowledge that she will be treated and respected as an individual.
  • Creating an atmosphere of tolerance, openness and trust in which teasing, harassment and bullying cannot thrive.
  • Providing a range of activities, hobbies and opportunities related to age and maturity that will assist in the personal, social and cultural development of each boarder.
  • Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of each boarder, by providing an environment that is as far as possible, free from physical hazards and dangers of any sort.
  • Providing accommodation that is suited to the needs of boarders, according to age and maturity, and which provides good levels of comfort and privacy.
  • Providing the conditions for boarders to develop their intellectual talents through well-structured homework conditions, access to staff and other pupils, participation in activities and in an atmosphere which values effort.
  • Developing boarders’ responsibility for self, for others and for the environment.
  • Developing boarders’ qualities of leadership and ability to work as part of a team.
  • Encouraging boarders to contribute to the needs and welfare of others in Boarding, the whole school, as well as those in the wider community.
  • Providing the right conditions for boarders to feel able to turn to members of staff to share the good things in their lives, as well as seeking advice, counselling and support during times of difficulty.

Many of the day girls choose to take up the occasional boarding option. This allows them to stay overnight or during the weekend when parents have commitments or the girls themselves have late clubs or activities. Since its launch this has proved a very popular facility for the girls, who can enjoy the boarding activities, and for their parents who know their daughter is in safe hands.

Many parents also take advantage of a later evening collection to fit with their weekly commitments. The girls can stay for supper and be collected in the evening if required.
